OPP have finally recovered the body of 9-year old Alex Ottley.

A sharp-eyed Peacock Point resident saw something in the water that “caused them concern” Tuesday and called the OPP said Haldimand Const. Rod LeClair

A helicopter that was helping with another search in the area flew over and confirmed there was something there, the marine unit was sent out and Alex’s body was recovered.

Alex and his 8-year friend were on the ice edge on February 15 when they were swept into the water by waves. The 8 year old was rescued by passers-by flagged down by a 10 year old girl, but Alex never resurfaced.
Haldimand OPP and various search and recovery units including helicopters, divers, and sonar searched for eleven days, although rough water, high winds and dangerous ice conditions hampered the search. The Underwater Unit could not enter the water on some days.
Police were reluctantly forced to pull out after eleven days because of the danger from shifting ice although volunteers and community members continued to search the shoreline.
Alex’s body has now been transported to the coroner’s office in Toronto, said LeClair.
