If I was starving, and had no other way, I’d risk my life to obtain food.  If I was naked, and had no other way, I’d risk embarrassment to obtain some clothes.  If I was car-less, and had no other way, I’d stick my thumb out.  It would be humiliating but relatively safe.

It’s rather pathetic that anyone, especially an adult, would risk his/her life because they needed a ride. 

If Peter Khill is found guilty of second-degree murder (over attempted theft of his vehicle), that risk and the deterrent it provides will be gone.  Car thieves will be pleased.  Potential car thieves will be emboldened.  The justice system will have failed us.
