Haldimand OPP is warning local businesses after investigating an attempted fraud in Cayuga.
Early Wednesday morning, OPP were contacted by a complainant who said one of their customers (Haldimand County) had received a request via email, to change the complainant’s banking information to a financial institution in Northern Ontario.

An alert Haldimand County Finance Division staff member noticed some ‘red flags’ and contacted the complainant to verify the validity of the request.
Haldimand County had received a similar request in late 2019 from someone posing as a different vendor which was also not valid.
Neither request was processed.
“Thanks to the diligence of the Haldimand County Finance Division staff members, both of the scam attempts were halted and no money was lost,” said Kyra Hayes, Supervisor – Corporate Affairs, Haldimand County.
OPP is reminding all residents and local businesses to verify requests before giving banking or personal information to anyone.
OPP is asking anyone who may have any information regarding this incident to contact them at 1-888-310-1122.
