Haldimand OPP has called off the search for the body of 9-year-old Alex Ottley, who was swept off the ice into Lake Erie eleven days ago, and presumably drowned.
OPP Const. Rodney Leclair says it was an extremely difficult decision.
“We’ve searched an extensive portion of the lake and shoreline and it is unknown, at this time, where the body may have gone to.”
After an extensive search in the area of Peacock Point and outlying areas of Lake Erie as well as the shoreline, the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit completed their search operation at the end of day yesterday.
The all-out 11-day effort saw searchers battling some extremely hazardous conditions including rough water, incoming ice and high winds.
The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit have utilized sonar scan and sent divers in the water when weather conditions permitted. Icebreakers, drones, OPP and U.S. coastguard helicopters and shoreline searchers all took part in the drive to find the boy.
Aerial searches by the OPP helicopter and shoreline searches will continue in the area periodically. Anyone who may have any information in the future is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
