On November 1, the Haldimand OPP Crime unit, under the direction of Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) Detective Inspector Randy Gaynor, laid additional charges against an individual as a result of an opioid overdose which claimed a life in Haldimand County.

Jesse Ross Wellings, 27, from Haldimand County, is now facing the following charges: manslaughter; causing death by criminal negligence, and trafficking a controlled substance- schedule 1. He is being held in custody and is scheduled to appear in Cayuga court on November 5.

On February 1, 2019, police were called to an address on Main Street North in Hagersville where 32 year old Jason Robert Kerr was found unresponsive and later died at the scene. The investigation revealed the victim died as a result of an opioid overdose.

The OPP have investigated 13 occurrences where charges have been laid for manslaughter and/or criminal negligence causing death in relation to fatal overdoses since 2016. Of these occurrences, eight were this year.
