No safety threat to area residents


(HALDIMAND COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Haldimand County Detachment is currently on scene investigating an incident where an explosion occurred at a Highway 3, Cayuga, Haldimand County, Ontario address.

On Saturday January 13, 2018 at 10:16 a.m., OPP, Haldimand County Fire Services  and Haldimand County paramedics responded Highway 3 near River Road for an explosion at a residence.

OPP investigation, thus far, has determined that a 60-year-old male was working on some materials in the lower level of the residence when the materials exploded.

As a result, the male sustained serious burn injuries and was transported by Ornge Air Ambulance to hospital.

A 68-year-old female, who was on the main level of the residence at the time, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

There were no other occupants in the residence.

The residence sustained structural damage.

Highway 3 between River Road and Kohler Road was closed for approximately two hours but has since been reopened.

The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal attended and is investigating.

The OPP Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) is attending the scene to assist with the investigation.

Haldimand County Fire Services has determined the cause of the explosion is not suspicious.

OPP confirmed that there is no safety concern for the residents in the area.
