SIMCOE – Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett applauded the move by Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry John Yakabuski to ask the federal government for assistance in dealing with orphan gas wells.

Yakabuski’s letter came in the wake of an announcement for federal funding to assist the oil and gas industry in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. Part of the funding was targeted to plug orphan wells.

In his letter to the federal Ministers of Natural Resources and Finance, Yakabuski requested similar funding to deal with the estimated 27,000 gas wells in Ontario, the majority of which are in southern Ontario.

“I would ask that as the federal government is developing programs and financial supports for Canada’s oil and gas sector, Ontario’s petroleum sector be included and that we are regularly communicating so that together we can support this industry in the most effective way possible. Also, as you move into the next stages for these programs and supports, we would like to be looped into the decision-making,” Yakabuski wrote.

“Haldimand and Norfolk Counties have one of the largest concentrations of gas wells in Southwestern Ontario,” Barrett said. “Federal aid could go a long way to assisting with some of these long-standing problem.”
