Haldimand OPP investigated a fraud after a citizen reported a scammer set up a fake profile in their name at a Caledonia address and attempted to scam their friends for money.
The unknown person set up a fake profile account, impersonating the complainant, and contacted several of their friends saying that they had won money. In order to claim their winnings, they would need to send $2,000.
No money was ever sent and Face Book has since removed the fake profile.
OPP is warning the public to be extremely careful when asked to transfer money. Take some time to research who is requesting the funds and why they need it. Ask other family members to help you with the research. Someone may see something suspicious that you may have missed.
Scammers use all kinds of tactics like family emergency scams, lottery scams, and computer scams just to name a few. Remember, you can’t win a contest that you didn’t enter and if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
