Haldimand OPP is investigating a serious three vehicle collision on Haldimand Highway 54 in Caledonia, Sunday afternoon.
A vehicle driven by a 55-year-old was travelling north bound on Haldimand Highway 54 and, while stopped waiting for oncoming traffic in order to turn west bound (left) onto Sims Lock Road, was struck from behind by another northbound vehicle driven by an 18-year-old.
The momentum of the impact caused the stopped vehicle to go into the south bound lane where it was struck by a vehicle being operated by a 44-year-old driver. This vehicle was then smashed into a utility pole causing electrical wires to come down.
A witness reported one of the vehicles was on its roof.
Haldimand County paramedics transported the 55-year-old driver to an out of town hospital with life threatening injuries and the 44-year-old driver to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The 18-year-old driver of the third vehicle was treated at the scene.
OPP Traffic Collision Investigators (TCI) attended the scene and are assisting with the investigation.
Highway 54 was closed between Abbey Road and Young Road for approximately nine hours while investigators and other emergency personnel were on scene.
OPP is asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have any information to assist with the investigation, to contact them at 1-888-310-1122.
