Haldimand OPP will increase patrols in school zones as children return to school and is reminding all motorists, as well as pedestrians, to pay extra close attention to their driving.

“Students are returning to school and with increased pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic, motorists need to focus their full attention when behind the wheel,” says Haldimand OPP Detachment Commander Phil Carter.

The recent three vehicle crash on Hwy 6 at Orkney in Caledonia, right where students cross the road to get to school, has also ramped up anxiety in the community.

If speeding and safety risks and the possibility of tragedy tend to be low on your radar, maybe financial punishment will get your attention.

Some costs and penalties related to speeding:

> 20 km/hr above posted speed limit – fines start at $95.00 + 3 demerit points

> 30 km/hr above posted speed limit – fines start at $220.00 + 4 demerit points

> 40 km/hr above posted speed limit – fines start at $295.00 + 4 demerit points

> 50 km/hr above posted speed limit – automatic driver’s license suspension and vehicle impoundment

“School bus drivers and crossing guards depend upon every motorist’s co-operation and commitment to safe driving for the safety of the children,” Carter adds.
